SECTOR 02Heavy Industry & Hot Forming

Hot Rolling Mill Operations from Billet Charging and Reheating Furnace to Mill Stands, NDT and 3D Finished Warehouse

In hot rolling mills, semi-finished billets are fed by overhead bridge cranes to the furnace charging table, heated above 1200°C across reheating furnace zones, rolled through roughing, intermediate and finishing stands into target bar, profile or wire rod sections, cooled on the cooling bed, cut to length, inspected and bundled. The field architecture governs every screen from billet charging to 3D warehouse bay storage.

Specialized Shop-Floor Developments in This Sector

MESDEV-02.1

Furnace Entry Camera Verification and Billet Charging Interlock

Camera and weigh-scale verification of billets fed by overhead crane into the reheating furnace, preventing mixed-heat charging and preserving traceability for damaged tags.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Deformed physical billet tags in harsh mill environments or crane feeding of a billet from the wrong heat leads to mixed steel grades inside the rolling campaign.

ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH

  • Real-time comparison of the billet barcode read by the furnace entry camera against the active order's allowed heat and steel grade list.
  • Controlled operator matching from the active heat pool combined with roller-table weight tolerance verification when a physical tag is unreadable.
  • Automatic insertion of the verified billet into slot #1 of the reheating furnace tracking queue upon charge confirmation.

OPERATIONAL VALUE

Charging of wrong-heat or wrong-grade billets into the furnace is blocked, maintaining 100% heat traceability from billet yard to finished bundle.

MESDEV-02.2

In-Furnace Billet Thermal Map and SCADA – MES Reconciliation

Live slot-by-slot mapping of all billets inside the reheating furnace by position, order, heat color code, zone temperature and furnace dwell time.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Lack of visibility into exact heat and order boundaries among dozens of billets inside the furnace causes delayed mill setup changes during order transitions.

ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH

  • High-contrast color assignment for each heat group inside the furnace to visualize order transition boundaries on operator screens.
  • Real-time calculation of furnace entry timestamp and soaking duration (hours/minutes) per billet with over-soaking alerts.
  • Continuous piece-count reconciliation between physical furnace SCADA tracking and the MES billet queue.

OPERATIONAL VALUE

Operators supervise the entire in-furnace billet sequence, heat boundaries and soaking durations from a single screen.

DIGITAL TWINDEV-02.3

3D Virtual Rolling Mill and 3D Finished Warehouse Visualization

Live 3D digital twin covering the billet yard, reheating furnace, rolling stands, cooling bed, saws, NDT station and multi-tier 3D finished goods warehouse.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENT

Across a rolling line stretching hundreds of meters and a finished warehouse holding thousands of bundles, spotting flow bottlenecks and bay congestion from flat tables is slow.

ARCHITECTURAL APPROACH

  • 3D virtual plant rendering the furnace, rolling stands, cooling bed, shear/saws, NDT and bundling stations with live PLC and OEE telemetry.
  • 3D Warehouse view displaying bays, aisles and stacking tiers with occupancy percentages, steel grades and heat numbers.
  • Interactive inspection drawers showing active order, bundle list, downtime reason and quality status upon clicking any station or storage bay.

OPERATIONAL VALUE

Rolling mill management oversees the entire production line and finished warehouse capacity at a glance on a real-time 3D scene.
